Plant Based Design Residency

ABOUT THE RESIDENCY

Between 2017 and 2019 Passa Ao Futuro researched Portuguese basketry techniques. As a starting point they studied both basketry collections of the Popular Art Museum and National Ethnography Museum in Lisbon.

Resulting in the curation of the exhibition - “Hundreds of Baskets. A Sustainable Technology for the 21st Century” - to be presented at the Popular Art Museum in Lisbon. For this exhibition Passa Ao Futuro organized two collaborative residencies between artisans and designers in the creation of new utilitarian contemporary pieces. Focusing on the traditional know-how and the qualities of regenerative design that are held in local plant-based design.

Pico, 2019-20

Wicker lounge chair
Designed by Miguel Soeiro
Handcrafted by Fernando Nelas

Dimensions
140 x 100 x 75 cm

ABOUT PICO

“Pico’s” lounge chair is the result of a symbiosis between the past and the present. Striving to achieve both a minimal yet sculptural form through the exploration of the restraints and opportunities of traditional wicker weaving. The initial gesture is a vertex that slowly extends to comfortably surround and embrace the human body. It is light, stackable and blends itself with the landscape, while breathing fresh air.

tempo, 2020

Light shields in giant feather grass
Designed by Studio Christian Haas
Handcrafted by Isabel Martins

Dimensions
45cm diameter

ABOUT TEMPO

“Tempo”, characterized by its ambient light, circular and soft, highlights the beauty of the baracejo, wild and raw material, cleverly rolled up in the shape of a shield. The cantilevered position of this element is obtained through the relationship with the fine metallic structure embedded in a stable and solid Moleanos stone block. This connection between lightness and rigidity allows the baracejo to reveal itself as a beautiful visually floating element.
